The end of this week sees Plague Sunday, the day on which, in the village of Eyam in Derbyshire the local rector convinced the villager to observe a strict quarantine.
These measures prevented the plague from spreading through the surrounding countryside and saved a great many lives.
Plague Sunday is celebrated with a procession and memorial service in memory of those selfless villagers in Eyam who suffered heavier losses to save their neighbours.
